light a candle in Umbria

The Festa dei Ceri is a festival that takes place annually in May in the village of Gubbio, in Umbria. The festival has been held since the Middle Ages and is one of the oldest festivals in Italy! The name of the festival comes from the three "ceraioi", or wax candles, that are carried by the three patron saints of Gubbio: Sant’Ubaldo, Sant’Antonio Abate, and Sant’Georgio. The festival begins with a procession of the three patron saints through the city streets, carried on wooden platforms, which are decorated with flowers and greenery.

The people who carry the platforms, or "ceraioli", wear traditional costumes and are assisted by a team of people known as "sostieri". The ceraioli compete to see who can carry their saint's statue the furthest and the fastest. The race is a test of strength and stamina, and the winning team is awarded a prize! After the race, the ceri are taken to the Cathedral of Gubbio, where they are blessed by the bishop. The procession is followed by a traditional Italian lunch of roasted meats, potatoes, and other delicious specialities. The festival ends in style with a large fireworks display, a perfect way to end the evening. The Festa dei Ceri is a unique and popular festival that attracts visitors from all over Italy and the world. If you are in Umbria in May, be sure to experience this one-of-a-kind event!
