# Greece in October: Islands, Weather and Where to Stay

In October, the Greek sea is still warm and the islands are quieter. Our guide to the weather, the best destinations and the villas to book for an autumn stay.

![Greece in October: Islands, Weather and Where to Stay](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-cyclades-bay-whitewashed-houses.jpeg)

While most travellers think of Greece as an exclusively summer destination, October offers something the peak season rarely can. The summer crowds have thinned and the sea, warmed by three months of Aegean heat, is still comfortably swimmable across most of the islands. Le Collectionist has selected seven destinations across Greece, each home to a collection of private villas, to help you choose where to go, where to stay, and how to make the most of your October in Greece.

## Greece in October: Weather and the Sea

Across southern Greece and the Aegean islands, air temperatures average 22–25°C (72–77°F) in early October, easing to 19–22°C (66–72°F) by the final week of the month. The Ionian islands, including Corfu, run slightly cooler and wetter, particularly from mid-October. Sea temperatures are a highlight: the Aegean retains its summer warmth well into autumn, averaging 22–24°C (72–75°F) across most islands through October, making beach days and swimming comfortable well into the season. Crete, in the far south, is consistently the warmest option, with air temperatures reaching 23–25°C (73–77°F) and sea temperatures around 23°C (73°F) for most of the month. Rainfall increases as October progresses, particularly in the west, and the Cyclades, including Mykonos, Paros and Sifnos, see considerably less rain than Corfu or the Ionian coast.

## Early October or the Half-Term Break

The first half of the month offers the best of both worlds: warm sea temperatures, quieter beaches and more space to actually enjoy them, and most restaurants and ferry services are still running on their high season schedule. Direct flights operate through mid-October on most routes to the main islands, thinning out thereafter. Ferries between islands remain frequent, though inter-island connections to smaller destinations like Sifnos and Antiparos can become less predictable as the month progresses. It is worth verifying specific routes and schedules closer to your travel dates with operators directly, as timetables vary by year.

[![A straw hat on a terrace chair overlooking the bays of Antiparos](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-villa-aloni-antiparos-terrace-view.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-rental/villa-aloni-antiparos)

For families travelling during school half-term, which typically falls in the latter half of October, availability can be limited and the island atmosphere quieter than earlier in the month. Crete and the mainland options tend to offer the most reliable range of open restaurants and activities during that period, and your [Le Collectionist travel advisor](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/our-luxury-concierge-service) can verify what is open for your specific dates and help plan accordingly.

## Greece in October: Choosing Your Destination

From the warmth and reliability of Crete to the calm of Sifnos and the mainland ease of Porto Heli, each destination offers a different version of Greece in October.

### Crete

Crete offers the most consistent warmth of the seven destinations in October. As the southernmost of the major Greek islands, it stays warmer longer, and the combination of reliable air temperatures and sea temperatures around 23°C (73°F) makes it the most straightforward choice if beach days and warm swimming are central to your plans.

[![The Venetian lighthouse at the entrance to the old harbour of Chania, Crete](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-chania-lighthouse-crete.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/crete)

The island’s north coast, around Chania and Heraklion, is most accessible and best connected, with good beaches within easy reach. The south coast, around Plakias and Paleochora, is quieter and wilder, with some of the most unspoilt beaches in Greece. For walkers, the Samaria Gorge, one of the longest gorges in Europe, is open through to the end of October, though individual days can close after heavy rain; check conditions the day before you go.

Direct flights to Heraklion and Chania run through mid-October; beyond that, connections typically route via Athens. Our travel advisors can help you plan around your travel dates and find the right property for your stay.

Read our [guide to Crete](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-crete) and browse [Le Collectionist’s Crete villas](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/crete) to find your base.

### Porto Heli and Spetses

Porto Heli sits on the Argolic Gulf, a two-hour drive from Athens, and offers a mainland alternative to island life with its own particular October appeal. The sea averages 22°C (72°F), the beaches are quieter and more easily your own than at any point in the summer, and the area is considerably less dependent on tourist season infrastructure than the islands. Restaurants and services tend to stay open later in the year here than on the smaller Cycladic islands, making Porto Heli a reliable choice for late October travellers.

[![An outdoor lounge with a fire pit facing the sea at Antheia Estate, Porto Heli](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-antheia-estate-porto-heli-fire-terrace.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-rental/antheia-estate-porto-heli)

Spetses, a short boat ride away, offers classic Greek island atmosphere, good beaches and car-free charm as a day trip or overnight without the logistical complexity of a full island stay. Boat services operate through the autumn, though frequency reduces as October progresses. Check current schedules before building your plans around them.

Read our [Porto Heli guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-porto-heli) and explore [Le Collectionist’s homes in Porto Heli](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/porto-heli).

### Corfu

Corfu is perhaps the most atmospheric of the seven destinations in October, and also the most variable in weather. The Ionian Sea retains reasonable warmth through October, with sea temperatures averaging around 22°C (72°F), but Corfu receives significantly more rainfall than the eastern islands, particularly in the second half of the month. The beaches are quieter, though you should plan for the possibility of rain.

[![Vlacherna Monastery on its islet off the coast of Corfu](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/corfu.jpg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/corfu)

Corfu in October works best when you are not entirely reliant on beach weather. The island’s interior, with its olive groves, Venetian-influenced architecture and the old town of Kerkyra, is perfectly suited to cooler days. A villa with good indoor living space and a terrace with a view becomes particularly important here, and our concierge team can advise on which properties are best equipped for mixed October conditions.

Read our [Corfu guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-corfu) and browse [Le Collectionist’s Corfu villas](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/corfu).

### Paros and Antiparos

Paros in October is warm, relatively dry, and quieter than at any other point in the season. Sea temperatures hover around 22–23°C (72–73°F) and the beaches are quieter too, with more space and the particular satisfaction of having a good stretch of sand largely to yourself. The whitewashed lanes of Naoussa and Parikia reward slow exploration, and the island’s restaurants offer a more relaxed experience once the summer rush has passed.

[![Whitewashed Cycladic villa with blue shutters and an olive tree on Paros](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-villa-konstantine-paros-whitewashed.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-rental/villa-konstantine-paros)

Antiparos, a short ferry ride away, is smaller and quieter still, with its own good beaches, and makes a natural day trip or secondary base for those who want the contrast. Our travel advisors can help you decide whether Paros or Antiparos is the right fit for your group.

Read our [Paros guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-paros) and our [Antiparos guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-antiparos), and explore [Le Collectionist’s homes on Paros and Antiparos](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/paros-and-antiparos).

### Sifnos

Sifnos is known for its nature trails, tradition of handcrafted ceramics, and above all its food. Sifnian cuisine is built around slow-cooked dishes prepared in clay pots and widely regarded as the finest in the Cyclades. In October, the beaches are quieter, the trails cooler and more enjoyable, and the restaurants that remain open are the local tavernas and family-run establishments that define the island’s food culture.

[![View over a deep blue bay and the terraced hills of Sifnos](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-sifnos-bay-view-villa-meliti.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/sifnos)

The practical consideration for Sifnos is access. Ferry connections from Athens (Piraeus) reduce in frequency from mid-October, and inter-island connections can be unpredictable. Your travel advisor can help you plan around both, ensuring your dates and your villa work together.

Read our [Sifnos guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-sifnos) and browse [Le Collectionist’s Sifnos villas](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/sifnos).

### Mykonos

October reveals Mykonos beyond its lively summer reputation. The beach clubs and the high season energy have quieted, the beaches are calmer and more spacious, and the water remains warm through most of the month. What remains is the iconic whitewashed village, a softer golden light, and restaurants that return to their own rhythm.

[![Sun loungers beside a pool set among granite boulders, with the Aegean beyond, at a villa on Mykonos](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-villa-pnoe-mykonos-pool-sea-view.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-rental/villa-pnoe-mykonos)

Your October on Mykonos is shaped by the villa, the view and the table. You choose Mykonos for a private terrace looking out over the sea, long evenings at good tables, and mornings with space to explore at your own pace. For those drawn to history, [Delos](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/en/the-mysterious-island-of-delos-greece), the sacred uninhabited island a short boat ride away, is one of the great archaeological sites in the Aegean.

Read our [Mykonos guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-mykonos) and browse [Le Collectionist’s Mykonos villas](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/mykonos).

### Athens and its Riviera

Athens in October is one of the most rewarding ways to begin or end a Greek trip. The crowds have thinned, temperatures sit comfortably around 20–23°C (68–73°F), and the city’s archaeological sites are at their most accessible. For many of our guests, a night or two in Athens at either end adds considerably to the overall experience.

[![The Caryatids of the Erechtheion on the Acropolis of Athens](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/hubfs/greece-october-acropolis-caryatids-athens.jpeg)](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/athens-riviera)

The Athens Riviera, extending south along the Saronic coast towards Vouliagmeni and Sounion, offers a coastal base with good beaches within easy reach of the city, well suited to those who want a mix of culture and sea. Your travel advisor can help you combine it with a ferry trip to one of the island destinations above into a single, seamless stay.

## FAQ

 Is Greece warm in October?

Overall yes, but temperatures vary depending on where you go. Southern islands like Crete and the eastern Cyclades average 22–25°C (72–77°F) in early October, cooling to 19–22°C (66–72°F) by the end of the month. The Ionian islands, including Corfu, tend to be cooler and wetter, particularly in the second half of October. Read our [Corfu guide](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/le-collectionist-guide-to-corfu) for more on what to expect.

Can you still swim in Greece in October?

In most of Greece, yes. Sea temperatures across the Aegean average 22–24°C (72–75°F) through October, and the beaches are quieter than at any point in the summer. Crete is the warmest option, with sea temperatures around 23°C (73°F). Late October in the Ionian Sea is cooler and less reliable. [Browse Le Collectionist’s Greece villas](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/luxury-villas-rentals/greece) to find the right base.

Which destination suits late October best?

Crete is the most reliable, with warmer temperatures and good infrastructure. Porto Heli and the Athens Riviera are also strong choices, with restaurants and services that tend to stay open later than on the smaller islands. Your [Le Collectionist concierge team](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/our-luxury-concierge-service) can advise on what is open for your specific dates.

Do Greek islands close in October?

Some do, some do not. Beach clubs and summer-only restaurants typically close from mid to late October, though the timing varies by island and by year. Crete and Mykonos tend to have the most that remains open. Smaller islands like Sifnos require more careful checking. See our guide to the [best quiet Greek islands](https://magazine.lecollectionist.com/en/the-best-quiet-islands-to-visit-in-greece-for-peaceful-holidays) for more.

What should you check before booking an October villa in Greece?

Confirm pool heating availability and any associated arrangements; verify ferry or flight connections for your specific travel dates; and check which local restaurants and services will be open. Minimum night requirements can also change in the shoulder season. [Le Collectionist’s travel advisors](https://www.lecollectionist.com/en/custom-holidays) make these checks as part of the booking process.

October is one of the most rewarding and varied months to visit Greece, with options ranging from the reliable warmth of Crete to the atmosphere of Corfu and the calm of the Cyclades. The right choice depends on your group, your dates and what you want from the week.
